Fire Commissioner "Surprised" At Reported Bar Brawl

Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano says he doesn't know much about a bar brawl involving firefighters from an East Flatbush fire house last Friday and wouldn't rush to judgment Thursday.

"It's very early. I just got wind, I just got notified on it this morning," Cassano said. "We're looking at it and I can tell you that we're going to fully investigate with the department and then we'll see what the investigation brings to light."

The incident was said to have involved active and retired members of Engine 310 Ladder 174, who were all off-duty and drinking at the Salty Dog, a Bay Ridge bar with a firehouse theme.

Sources tell NY1 a firefighter spilled a drink on one of the bar's patrons, who reacted by punching him in the face.

In an off-camera interview, the bar's owner said a firefighter threw the first punch. A melee involving upwards of two dozen firefighters immediately erupted and was all caught on surveillance tape.

The tape has been handed over to the Department of Investigation and the New York City Police Department, both of which are looking into the matter.

Cassano says he hasn't seen the video, but was shocked to hear about the fight.

"The firehouse that's in question is a very active unit, it's made up of a very good crew, they do a lot of work with the Wounded Warriors, so when it came to my attention that that might be the company, I was surprised," Cassano said.

The four alleged victims, who are all cousins, all filed complaints following the fight. They hired attorney Joseph Tacopina, who spoke to NY1 on the phone about the incident.

Cassano says it's still too soon to speculate about disciplinary action against any of his members, because no formal charges have been filed.
