Stray Voltage Shocks Five In Herald Square

Stray voltage shocked at least five people in Herald Square during yesterday's blizzard, including a woman who was sent to Bellevue Hospital after she stepped on an electrified street grate.

The unidentified woman was zapped in the early afternoon at Broadway and 35th Street, the Fire Department said. She was treated for minor injuries.

At least four more people -- including a Post reporter -- were jolted by an electrified metal curb on 35th Street and a salty water puddle on the northwest corner of 35th Street and Sixth Avenue as Con Ed workers tried to fix the problem.

"It felt like someone grabbed a hold of my legs and yanked. It was very scary," said Danielle Guariano, 18, of Poughkeepsie, after she stepped in the puddle.

Con Ed detected 13 volts on an FDNY pull-box, and another 15 volts on a sewer grate. The problem was fixed by 5 p.m.

Stray voltage often shows up in soggy weather like yesterday's snowstorm.
