NY Man Accused Of Walking Pups With 10-Lb Chains

An upstate New York man is accused of animal cruelty for walking two pit bull puppies with 10-pound chains used for towing trucks around their necks.

Kenneth Merritt was arrested on two counts of overdriving, torturing or injuring animals while walking the puppies in Troy, where the 26-year-old man lives.

Members of the Troy Police Department saw Merritt walking the puppies with the heavy chains wrapped around their necks about 6:15 p.m. Friday.

Sgt. Terry Buchanan says the weight of the chains justify the cruelty charges.

Merritt was arrested and released. The puppies were taken to a shelter in Menands.

The suspect is scheduled to be in city court to answer the misdemeanor charges on Monday.

There was no home phone listing for Merritt.

Troy is 152 miles north of the Big Apple.
