New York - Couple Accused Of Cancer Scam

New York's attorney general has taken action against a Long Island couple who claimed to operate a breast cancer charity, and allegedly swindled generous donors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

College chemistry professor Stephen Goldberg thought something was fishy with The Coalition for Breast Cancer Cures when he got a letter asking him to pay up on a pledge he'd made.

That's when he blew the whistle.

"They said in the letter that on October 10, I made a pledge, which I had not made," he told CBS 2. "Simple as that."

Goldberg took the letter and sent it to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office. The result: a temporary restraining order against David and Mindy Winston, who rent a home in Great Neck, saying they swindled donors by phone and by letter out of a $500,000 over two years.

The lawsuit charges that instead of using the money to fight breast cancer, the Winstons spent it on themselves, including on luxury shopping, travel, and restaurants.

Neighbors of the Winstons were shocked after learning the couple swindled people over cancer.

"If they do that, shame on them," said Nasser Zar, who lives near the couple.

Goldberg said he supported the would-be charity because he's a chemist and his mother is a breast cancer survivor.

"I think it's outrageous," he said. "It's the worst kind of fraud because it plays not only on the goodness of people to support worthwhile charities, but it puts other charities in question."

The state is seeking to permanently shut down the operation, and bar the defendants from soliciting charitable contributions, not to mention paying restitution for the money collected.
