Paterson wants authority to furlough 100K state workers

Albany - Gov. Paterson asked the Legislature for extraordinary authority to furlough 100,000 state workers a few minutes ago after talks with public employees union on reducing workforce costs produced no savings.

“This crisis is worsening and we must take action,’’ said Paterson, referring to the massive $9 billion-plus deficit in the still-not-adopted state budget.

“I have been unable to secure any agreement with any of the public (employee) unions on how to come up with $250 million (in targeted savings,)’’ said Paterson.

“Therefore I’m sending up a piece of legislation tomorrow asking for the authority for one day of furlough in each appropriation that we make from here on until we pass this budget,’’ he continued.

The Legislature and the governor have been funding state operations on a week to week basis with austerity budget resolutions since the state’s new fiscal year began April 1.

Paterson, meanwhile, called on the Legislature to give him an “up or down’’ vote on his stalled-budget plan tomorrow, although lawmakers are expected to reject the appeal.
