New Jersey - Live hand grenade from World War era found outside Hopatcong home

Hopatcong, N.J. -  A live hand grenade from the late World War I or early World War II era was found by a Hopatcong homeowner who was digging outside of house on Sunday, police said Monday.

The vintage grenade still contained the pin used to detonate it, although the explosive device was heavily rusted, said Sgt. Tom Kmetz.

The grenade was found in a white plastic bag about 6-10 inches underground by the homeowner outside of his house on Chamberlain Street at about noon Sunday, said Kmetz.

After finding the device, the homeowner took it to his backyard and called police. Police then notified the bomb squad at Picatinny Arsenal, and two members of the squad responded and removed the device for disposal.

Kmetz said it is not known when the grenade was buried. The current homeowner has lived there for several years, and the house was previously rented to various tenants.
