New Jersey - Rash Of Burglaries Hits Bergen County

New Jersey - Suburban quiet … disturbed.

Residents in Bergen County were advised to lock their doors and windows Monday night after a string of brazen early morning burglaries.

"I looked out the window and I had a prowler on my porch," said Mike Schoenbach of Midland Park.

The person who tried to get into Schoenbach's home got away in the middle of the night. His recent run in is very similar to what happened overnight. Three break-ins after midnight and a BMW stolen right from a driveway.

The burglar didn't go far to commit the crimes. The homes are within blocks of each other. In fact, the burglar could have walked to each of them. They happened within a two-hour time frame.

"It's probably been decades since we had a cat burglar. It's very upsetting for people," Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said.

The burglar got into the first home through a front window, then walked right out of the front door.

The next break-in came in similar fashion, through an opened first floor window.

The last ended with the suspect stealing a getaway car out of a driveway -- a 2004 BMW SUV with a New Jersey license plate VYH27Y.

"We have information out countywide to ascertain whether burglaries of this sort happened in other locations," Chief Fox said.

Police have added security in the neighborhoods affected.

"Freaking out. It's a quite community," Chris Petronzio said.

"I leave my keys in the car all the time. It's Bergen County. Then you hear something like this and you see it can really happen," Matt Berrian said.

And now, many are worried the midnight burglar could strike again.

"It's not a good way to live. To be frightened yeah, it's not a good way to live," Berrian said.
