New York - Line Stretches Down The Block For NYC Hotel Job

New York - One after another, job-seekers filed through the ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel Saturday, clutching resumes and holding fast to hopes that they would be the next one hired.

"Whatever my resume qualifies me for I'm going to take it, any and everything, yes," said LaToya Borden of Far Rockaway.

Outside, the line stretched down the block. Waiting nervously was Anthony Wong, who's been out of work for six months.

"I can't even count how many jobs I've applied for, but it's really rough," the Woodside resident said.

The hotel was looking to hire around 300 employees to staff its new hotel across town, which is slated to open in July.

For Margarita Vargas of Astoria, who was among 400 laid off from Tavern On The Green in December, it's an opportunity worth waiting for.

"I was here since 6:00 in the morning and there was already a line but it's alright, hopefully to get a job," she said.

For job hopefuls this line represents an incredible opportunity. Hotel executives said they'll interview every single person that comes here between 9 and 6.

Thousands have already come through, and General Manager Drew Schlesinger expects another round of interviews in the near future. He said today's economic climate makes the hiring process dramatically different than it was a few years ago.

"Three or four years ago it was a little harder to get this many people to show up," he said.

Fern Lewis of Parkchester made sure she was there when the doors opened, and she's got a little luck on her side. "Matter of fact I cracked an egg today and it was a twin egg so I thought that was maybe a positive for me."
