Fire At Con Ed Station Spews Heavy Smoke In NY

New York - A fire at a Consolidated Edison substation in suburban New York has been put out after it sent thick black smoke into the air that was visible for miles.

Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze at the Yonkers Con Ed substation Saturday.

Utility spokesman Chris Olert said the fire started at about 10 a.m. and was out by 11:30 a.m.

He said the fire was in a pump house where oil is circulated that is used for cooling and insulating equipment.

Olert said there were no power outages resulting from the fire.

Con Ed is evaluating the extent of any damage to its equipment.

Con Ed "provides electric service in New York City (except for a small area of Queens), and most of Westchester County."
