GE recalls about 181,000 washing machines

General Electric Co. (GE)  is recalling 181,000 front-load washing machines due to fire and shock hazards, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
A faulty wire can lead to a fire when it comes into contact with a metal part on the washtube during operation, the CPSC said.

There have been seven incidents of minor smoke damage but no injuries have been reported so far.

The machines, manufactured in China, were sold at various U.S. retailers from December 2006 to May 2010 for about $700.

For more information, consumers can call (888) 345-4124 or go to www.geappliances.com.
