New York - Accused $30M Ponzi scammer too broke to hire lawyer

New York - Accused Ponzi schemer to the stars Kenneth Starr can't even afford a lawyer anymore.

Starr, who just last week was living large in a $7.5 million Manhattan apartment, was assigned a court-appointed attorney Wednesday at a Federal Court hearing.

The 66-year-old financial advisor to Uma Thurman and other stars remains jailed without bail in the purported $30 million rip-off.

And his assets remained frozen, with a federal monitor in place to ensure nothing gets looted from any of Starr's three businesses.

Starr is also barred from taking out a new mortgage on his Manhattan home - which authorities allege was purchased with stolen money.

The apartment features a 32-foot pool and an expansive garden.

High-powered defense attorneys Ed Hayes and his brother Steven were expected to ask a federal judge to free up some of Starr's funds to cover defense costs.

Starr was cowering inside a closet at his E. 74th St. home when federal agents arrived to arrest him last Thursday.
