Newburgh, N.Y. - Police Talk 19-Year-Old Man Out of Jumping off Newburgh-Beacon Bridge

A 19-year-old Walkill man was taken to Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen this morning after threatening to jump off the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, state police in Newburgh said.

The state police at 9:30 p.m. Thursday received a report of a person hanging on to a rail on the eastbound span of the bridge. Troopers arrived but did not find the man until about midnight. Upon finding him, he climbed over the rail and jumped down to a beam beneath the bridge, state police said.

Senior Investigator Neil Moscato spoke to the man for about four hours, after which a New York State Bridge Authority bucket, used to work on the bridge, was lowered to the man, with a member of the state police's special operations response team inside.

The Walkill man agreed to get into the bucket, and tried to jump out once inside, but was eventually taken back up to the span, state police said. He was taken to Arden Hill Hospital for a mental health evaluation. He was not charged with any crime.

The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and City of Newburgh Police Department Dive Team were in boats, on the Hudson River beneath the bridge, while the negotiations were under way, state police said.

Lanes of the bridge were closed to traffic at different points during the negotiation, but were never completely shut down.
