Washington - Justice Department Arrests 10 Agents Allegedly Spying For Russia
Washington - Federal agents arrested 10 people, including three in New York and two in New Jersey, accusing them of working undercover as secret agents for the Russian Federation in the United States, CBS 2 has learned.
The multi-year investigation by the FBI led to the major sweep Sunday when agents took the suspects into custody in Manhattan; Yonkers; Montclair, N.J.; Boston; and Arlington, Va.
Under arrest in Manhattan was Anna Chapman. In Montclair, a couple known as "Richard Murphy" and "Cynthia Murphy" were taken into custody. And in Yonkers, Vicky Pelaez and a suspect identified as "Juan Lazaro" were taken into custody at their home.
All were expected to appear in a Manhattan federal court Monday. They're being charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. Attorney General, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
Chapman also faces a charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering, which faces an additional 20 years behind bars.
