Iran: Israel Tried to Hijack Plane

A top Iranian official said Sunday that “Israeli agents” had tried over the weekend to hijack a plane that was traveling from Tehran to Damascus.

The accusation followed a report Saturday than an armed man had tried to wrest control of an Iranian plane.

The official said that the hijack attempt had been designed to “divert attention from the visit of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik [sic] al-Hariri to Iran.”

Rafik Hariri was killed in a car-bomb attack in 2005. His son Saad visited Tehran on Saturday.
