New York City’s Record 50.5 Million Tourists Last Year Surpass Estimates

The city reached a record high for tourism in 2011 — and unusually warm weather was part of the draw.

New figures released Wednesday show 50.5 million tourists visited the city last year.

The number is slightly more than the estimated 50.2 million Mayor Bloomberg announced in mid-December.

The boost came from mild temperatures at the end of last month, according to the city’s official tourism arm, NYC & Company.

“The unseasonably warm weather during the last two weeks of the year provided an additional incentive for visitors to travel to New York City, helping the industry achieve its best year yet for overall visitation,” NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta said.

Fertitta seems to have earned his keep. He and eight other bosses at NYC & Company made more than $200,000 each in 2010, tax records show.

Fertitta cleared the most, $353,960.

The company said the salaries were necessary to attract top talent.

“Our senior management salaries are on par with their private sector marketing and tourism industry counterparts,” Fertitta said.
