Alleged Torah thief charged with failing to register as sex-offender
Liberty – The Woodbourne man arrested in the theft of a Torah from a Monticello synagogue was charged Thursday with failing to register as a sex offender and violating a protective order, Liberty police said.
Christopher Colvill, 41, was charged with failing to register and verify his physical address, a felony, and second-degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor.
He has been jailed since his Jan. 24 arrest at a Woodbourne address where police recovered a $35,000 Torah stolen over New Year's weekend from the Landfield Avenue Synagogue.
Before the arrest Colvill, convicted in 1998 of first-degree sodomy, had been listed in the state sex-offender registry as living at a Village of Liberty address, police said.
Liberty police also charged Colvill with violating a protective order in December by going to the residence of a female who had a protective order against him.
He was arraigned in Town of Liberty Court and returned to Sullivan County Jail pending his next court appearance.
