Israel embassy attack: Device used worries police
Investigation into the the explosion outside the Israeli embassy in Delhi's high-security area that left four people including a diplomat's wife injured, is on. Sources have told CNN-IBN that an incendiary explosive device was used in the attack. That is a device that can itself start a fire.
Police said that such a sticking bomb has never been used in any terror attack in the country in the recent past. They said that it was definitely the first time such a bomb has been used in Delhi.
Though armed forces across the world have been using it for decades, our police forces haven't come across the use of such a bomb. Many senior officials also said that this was a cause for concern.
Terror returned to Delhi and this time a few hundred metres away from the Prime Minister's residence and with complex international ramifications. An Israeli Embassy car blew up close to the high security Tughlak Road area shortly after 3 pm on Monday, severely injuring Tal Vessova, the 43-year-old wife of an Israeli embassy official. She was on her way to pick her children from the American Embassy School. Her driver and two others suffered injuries.
Eyewitnesses told the Delhi Police that a motor biker stuck a magnetic device at the rear end of the vehicle which caused the blast. The police confirmed that it was a targeted attack.
Within hours it was clear that this was no ordinary attack. Besides the use of a stick-on bomb, the police believe the lone attacker had followed the car for a while indicating his confidence and that the target was specifically chosen. Israel quickly publically blamed Iran and the Hezbollah, saying this was a terrorist attack aimed at their nation. Sources said besides many central agencies of Israel, the Mossad was now likely to be an active ally in the probe.
Earlier on Monday, another bomb was defused in the Israeli embassy in Georgia, an act the Israelis believe was timed with the Delhi attack.
One thing is for certain that cracking this case will be a big challenge for the investigators. The device used and the manner in which the attack was carried out is something Indian authorities haven't ever come across and they will definitely work closely with Israeli investigators to find the culprits.
