Cold Hearted Thieves Stole WWII Memorial Plaque On Staten Island

It took two, two cold-hearted thieves to steal a heavy bronze plaque, in Livingston, that honored World War II veterans from Staten Island.

WWII veteran Jim Luzzi told CBS 2′s John Slattery that the theft of the plaque is “a slap in the face for myself and every veteran.”

Luzzi was a machine gunner who served in the Italian campaign, his unit suffered heavy casualties at Anzio Beach.

Luzzi and other Staten Island veterans learned last week that the plaque had been stolen.

The plaque had been located on Bay Terrace near Snug Harbor, it overlooked the Kill Van Kull, it is an area managed by the Parks Department.

At some point last week the bolts holding the plaque into place were snapped and the plaque was removed.

Veteran Tony Fanelli believes the plaque was sold for scrap.

“I honestly think they parked a truck in front, there were tire tracks, it gave them cover, and they chiseled off this particular plaque.”

The theft and desecration of the memorial will net the thieves less than $200, if they can sell it.

The veterans have still not been able to find a list with the 100 names that were on the plaque, they are offering a $750 reward for its return.

A lot of the bread in the US will no longer be kosher

The largest baking company in the United States will be removing kosher certification from nearly all of its bread and rolls. Bimbo Bakeries USA confirmed to JTA that it will be removing the certification. The company produces brands including Arnold, Sara Lee, Stroehmann, Freihofer’s and others. Two of its major brands, Entenmann’s and Thomas, will remain certified kosher. So, kosher eaters, your crumb doughnuts and English muffins are still safe. A couple of rye breads also will retain their certifications. “Removing the kosher certification from some of our products was strictly a business-process decision to enable more efficient operations, and it was one we did not make lightly,” Bimbo said in a statement. “Thomas’ and Entenmann’s products as well as Arnold’s and Levy’s Rye Breads will remain kosher-certified.
