Man caught trying to steal highway light pole

A Long Island man is accused of trying to cut down and steal a light pole from the Meadowbrook Parkway.

It happened at 5:34 p.m. on Sunday.

State troopers responded to a report of a man loading a light pole into a van on the southbound side of the roadway near Sunrise Highway.

Upon arrival, troopers noticed a man with a saw standing next to a brown Ford Aerostar Van. The pole was right next to a light pole.

Police say William Richardson, 45, of Hempstead, said he was cutting the light pole to load into his van and sell it.

Richardson was arrested on felony criminal mischief and grand larceny charges. Richardson was held for arraignment in Nassau County First District Court.
