MTA On Track To Purchase New Subway Cars
Some of the city's oldest subway cars could soon be
headed off the rails.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's transit
subcommittee has approved a plan to buy 300 new subway cars.
They'll replace older cars primarily on the C line, which
has some subway cars that are nearly 50 years old.
New cars will also be ordered for the J and Z lines.
It would be the first purchase of new subway cars in
about three years.
The full MTA board is expected to sign off on the nearly
$600 million purchase later this week.
The new cars should arrive from Bombardier's Plattsburgh
plant by the end of 2014 and will be phased into service the following year.
