MTA Report: Jump In Number Of People Struck In Subways

Labels: ,

New data shows that 147 subway riders were struck by a train last year, 50 of them fatally. That’s a 15 percent jump from the year before when 128 were struck.

The MTA data is contained in a report on customer safety.

The number of overall subway customer injuries, meanwhile, was down in 2011. The total was 4,783, compared to 4,996 in 2010.

There have already been a number of deadly subway incidents this year.

In Feb., police say a man was struck and killed by a train while walking on the tracks in SoHo.

Just last week, a 20-year-old college student was hit and killed at the Bedford Avenue station in Brooklyn when police say an altercation between him and another man on the L train spilled onto the platform. They two then fell onto the tracks while one man was able to climb out, the other couldn’t and was struck by an oncoming train.

The report also says 200 MTA workers were out of work because they were victims of assaults. That’s up from 176 cases in 2010.
