Magnitude-5.6 quake hits Israel

An earthquake was felt across Israel around 5 pm on Monday. According to the US Geological Survey, the temblor had a magnitude of 5.6 and originated 211 kilometers (about 130 miles) south of Antalya, Turkey.

The Geophysical Institute of Israel reported the tremor had a magnitude of 5.7.

Hundreds of Ynet readers located in Tiberias, Haifa, Rishon Lezion, Kiryat Gat, Beersheba and other cities reported feeling the quake. "I work on the seventh floor in the center of the city and I felt the building shaking," a resident of Tel Aviv told Ynet.

"Our living room moved," Yaron Ben-Shimon of Acre said. "My daughter ran towards me. There was a moment of fear, and then it was over. I hope such a quake won't repeat itself."

The last earthquake to rock Israel occured on May 12 around 10 pm, and was deemed to have a magnitude of 5.3.
