Drunk Man Sleeping in Portland Dumpster Compacted Twice ... And Lives
A drunk man snoozing in a large trash bin got compacted
twice and lived to tell the tale.
Justin Gilpatrick, 27, left a Portland, Ore., bar called
Club 205 inebriated early Friday morning. Recognizing he was too drunk to
drive, Gilpatrick decided to nap in a recycling bin filled with cardboard until
he sobered up. In his intoxication, he clearly didn't realize it was pickup
day.
Gilpatrick made one good and one terrible decision that
night. "He knows he's too drunk to drive so he decides not to, which is a
great decision. Followed by a really bad decision - going to sleep in a
dumpster that gets dumped into a truck," Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland
Police Bureau told KGW.
A Waste Management recycling truck arrived to emptied the
dumpster after 1 a.m. Gilpatrick was flung into the truck's recycling compactor
along with the cardboard. The driver had no idea the drunken man was trapped in
the back of his truck for about a quarter of a mile.
The driver compacted his load of recyclables twice with
Gilpatrick inside. Since the compactor was relatively empty, Gilpatrick wasn't
killed. But on a busier recycling night, he easily could have been.
The driver stopped the truck when he heard Gilpatrick
screaming, said WM spokesperson Jackie Lang. The startled driver brought
Gilpatrick to a safe location and provided provisional care until the medical
personnel arrived.
The driver reportedly had to persuade Gilpatrick to stay
put until ambulances arrived.
He was transported to the hospital for minor injuries
around 2:45 a.m., reports KGW.
The Portland Police Bureau does not expect any charges in
this incident.
