JetBlue Slapped With Fine For Lengthy JFK Delay

The federal government has slapped JetBlue Airways with a $90,000 fine for an incident at John F. Kennedy International Airport that violated the so-called passenger bill of rights.

It is the first fine issued for this type of violation.

The Department of Transportation says it involves a flight from New York to San Francisco on March 3 that was scheduled to depart JFK at 7:30 p.m. but was delayed and the plane's doors were kept open for nearly two-and-a-half hours.

The DOT says the airline failed to tell passengers they could leave the plane as long as it sat at the gate with the door still open.

The government's airline consumer protection rules state airlines must tell passengers when they have an opportunity to get off the plane while it is waiting to depart.

Those announcements must be made 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time and every half-hour after.
