Officials Identify 13 West Nile Cases In NYS In 2012

Health officials say 13 people in New York State have been infected with the West Nile virus so far this year.

Two of those people, both elderly, died.

The latest confirmed fatal case was from Oyster Bay in Nassau County. The other is from Onondaga County in upstate New York.

Federal health officials said the current national West Nile outbreak of more than 1,100 cases is one of the country's worst ever.

Many of the cases have been in Texas.

Experts believe the mild winter, early spring and hot summer helped stimulate mosquito breeding and the spread of the disease.
