Japanese Officials Learn About Hurricane Recovery On Staten Island

A Japanese emergency disaster task force visited the Ocean Breeze section of Staten Island on Saturday, to learn lessons from Hurricane Sandy response and recovery to prepare for their own natural disasters.

They Japanese government officials toured the area in the morning and spoke with homeowners about their experiences during the hurricane.

The task force aims to bring some of the city's evacuation and emergency procedures to Japan.

"To have government officials come all the way from Japan and acknowledge us, that we've been through this, and just be so kind and so concerned and what we're doing, how we're moving forward with the situation after the storm is just wonderful," said Jean Laurie of the Ocean Breeze Civic Association.

Japanese engineers also gave Ocean Breeze residents tips on how to rebuild the community to better withstand storm damage.
