Police Give 'All Clear' After Probing Suspicious Newark Car

Police in New Jersey's largest city say a car parked near a railroad overpass did not contain a bomb.

The Dodge Omni was parked about six car lengths from a railroad overpass in Newark that serves Amtrak and NJ Transit trains. The trains are still running.

A few police cars were first seen around the car at around 11:30 a.m. today, said local residents. By 1 p.m. there were at least nine police cars on the scene.  By 1:45 p.m. bomb squad technicians in full gear had backed away and two robots were examining the vehicle.

The all clear was given around 2:20 pm.

Police blocked off the section of street below the overpass so traffic cannot go under the tracks. The area is a mostly residential section near a main thoroughfare in Newark.

Police said authorities have identified the owner of the auto through motor vehicle records and are attempting to contact that person. Police did not release the owner's name or place of residence.

Last month, 30-year-old Faisal Shahzad pleaded guilty to a failed bombing attempt using a sport utility vehicle rigged with a homemade bomb in Times Square on May 1.

Shahzad was arrested as he tried to leave the country on a Dubai-bound flight. He said he had trained with Pakistani Taliban leaders and had planned a revenge attack in the U.S.

Index for a million documents on Polish Jewry to go online

Researchers of Polish Jewry are set to gain online access to more than 1 million new documents following an agreement signed by the Polish State Archives. A lot of the bread in the US will no longer be kosher

The largest baking company in the United States will be removing kosher certification from nearly all of its bread and rolls. Bimbo Bakeries USA confirmed to JTA that it will be removing the certification. The company produces brands including Arnold, Sara Lee, Stroehmann, Freihofer’s and others. Two of its major brands, Entenmann’s and Thomas, will remain certified kosher. So, kosher eaters, your crumb doughnuts and English muffins are still safe. A couple of rye breads also will retain their certifications. “Removing the kosher certification from some of our products was strictly a business-process decision to enable more efficient operations, and it was one we did not make lightly,” Bimbo said in a statement. “Thomas’ and Entenmann’s products as well as Arnold’s and Levy’s Rye Breads will remain kosher-certified.
