Olympics Workers Flee Unexploded WWII Bomb at London 2012 Site

Shocked London Olympics workers fled after an excavator struck a Nazi bomb left over from World War II.

Construction crews from the 2012 Games raced away Wednesday amid fears the relic could explode.

The scare halted work to clear a site for four temporary indoor basketball courts in east London.

It resumed four hours later after police were called and the 2.2-pound (one-kilogram) bomb was taken away.

"No one knew whether it was still dangerous, but no one was taking any chances," a London 2012 source said. "The lads got clear of it. We've been worried about bombs from al Qaeda at the Games but didn't reckon on getting one from Hitler."

The courts will be used by teams to practice.

Officials confirmed the bomb was "safely removed." A spokesman stressed, "At no time were nearby people or property put at risk and work has now resumed."

Minor earthquake rattles Los Angeles

Seismologists say a mild earthquake widely felt throughout Southern California was centered along the coast west of downtown Los Angeles. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-3.8 quake struck at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday. The epicenter was 2 miles east-southeast of Marina del Rey near Culver City and Inglewood.
