Woodland, Washington - Swastikas, N-word among taunts at Woodland school

-
Tom Hammond says what happened to his son Caleb at Woodland Intermediate School shouldn't happen to any child. The incident took place last Thursday. Hammond told KATU News that a number of students surrounded his son and asked him if he was a Jew.  His son Caleb said “maybe” at which point the other kids allegedly drew swastikas on their hands and said “these repel you." From there, the attack got worse. “They surrounded him, kicking him in the stomach,” Hammond said. “ We're not sure which kids threw rocks and hit him in the back.  And then there was two other kids in the background acting like they were runnin' little video cameras goin' 'look at the gay dude.'” “Enough is enough,” Hammond said. “It's time for it to stop.” It appears the attack on Caleb is not an isolated incident. Other parents and kids are coming forward, saying the school isn't doing enough to stop student racial slurs. Student Gillian Brockman said she was called “nig...

Germany will compensate Kindertransport survivors $2,800 each

-
Germany has agreed to compensate those who fled Nazi Germany as children on the so-called Kindertransport with a one-time payment of approximately $2,800 each. The new agreement, negotiated by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany with the German government, comes 80 years after the first rescue transports of children from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland to England. The British government had agreed to take a contingent of children under the age to 17 after the anti-Jewish pogrom of Nov. 9, 1938, known as Kristallnacht, made it more clear than ever that Jews in those countries were not safe. More than 10,000 Jewish children and youths were rescued. Many saw their parents for the last time as they said goodbye at train stations in the German Reich. According to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the last transport from Germany left on Sept. 1, 1939, the day World War II began. The last transport from the Netherlands left for Britain on May 14, 1940, ...

Newsweek publishes its list of the most influential rabbis

-
In the fall of 2006, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and his pal Gary Ginsberg, now an executive vice president of Time Warner Inc., began working on a list of the 50 most influential rabbis in the U.S. The friends devised the following unscientific criteria to rank the leaders, whose specialties range from kashrut to Kabbalah: Are they known nationally/internationally? (20 points.) Do they have political/social influence? (20 points.) Do they have a media presence? (10 points.) Are they leaders within their communities? (10 points.) Are they considered leaders in Judaism or their movements? (10 points. ) How big are their constituencies? (10 points.) Have they made an impact on Judaism in their career? (10 points.) Have they made a greater impact beyond the Jewish community and their rabbinical training? (10 points.). Newsweek published that first list around Passover, 2007, with this caveat: “Is the list subjective? Yes. Is it mischievous in its conception? Defin...
