AAA: Memorial Day Travel Up From Last Year

If experts are right, more people will hit the road this Memorial Day weekend than last year. 

Blame it on summer fever, or a just a plain old addiction to rest and relaxation. Whatever the reason, travel analysts say the Memorial Day holiday weekend is getting longer – stretching from Thursday to Tuesday. 

AAA estimates 3.8 million people from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania will travel this weekend – that's an 8 percent increase from last year. 

Analysts credit lower gas prices for the higher travel number, but AAA says because of a still fragile economy, families will likely spend less this year on summer travel, taking more road trips instead of a flight.

Of course, more vehicles on the road this weekend will also mean a heightened law enforcement presence across our region, from a drunk driving crackdown on Long Island, to tougher seatbelt enforcement in New Jersey. 

"It is the start of click it or ticket," said Pam Fischer, Director of the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety Our goal overall in New Jersey is 100% for all occupants in motor vehicles – regardless of age or seating position." 

If you needed some extra motivation to hit the road this weekend, here's some good news: Gas prices are at their lowest since March.

Minor earthquake rattles Los Angeles

Seismologists say a mild earthquake widely felt throughout Southern California was centered along the coast west of downtown Los Angeles. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-3.8 quake struck at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday. The epicenter was 2 miles east-southeast of Marina del Rey near Culver City and Inglewood.
